How To Make Double Denim Cool

How To Make Double Denim Cool

Welcome back everyone! Hope you’re doing alright in these crazy times. Today’s blog post is a pretty simple one, I think.

Everybody has denim in their closet (if you don’t, you’re a better person than I am). I’m sure everybody has also heard those “fashion rules” about not wearing white after labor day and not wearing double denim.

I’m here today to say SCREW FASHION RULES AND WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT! But of course, not everybody is so carefree like me.

Today’s blog post is all about how I make wearing double denim “cool”. Hopefully, this blog post inspires you to try out this style and make it your own!

The first thing you have to do is, of course, gather your denim. Half of my closet is denim, so this wasn’t too hard for me. Raid Plato’s Closet, Goodwill and thrift stores (once it’s safe to do so, obviously), your parents’ closet and other places for decent jeans, jackets and other denim items.

Once you have a good selection, pull out everything you’d like to pair together. I pulled out my numerous denim jackets, favorite pair of denim pants and other denim items I have (a denim skirt and a denim dress).

Now, it’s time to start pairing. The key to pairing denim but still making it fashionable is seeing how things compliment with one another.

I looked at all my options and decided to go with an oversized denim jacket and high waisted jeans, with a white undershirt. Just because you want to wear double denim doesn’t mean everything you wear needs to be denim, or even the same denim color!

I am sitting on a chair in front of my collage wall. I'm wearing an oversized jacket and white shirt.

My jeans matched a few of the light panels of my jacket, but still complimented my white shirt. A look like this could still be pulled off with dark jeans and a dark jacket, a light denim shirt and a dark denim skirt, or any other combination.

The point of this step is to realize that double denim doesn’t mean a denim shirt, jeans and that’s it. Switch up the denim look with a jacket, skirt or even denim-like boots or heels!

Double denim outfit suggestions:

  • Acid washed denim jacket, white shirt, acid washed jeans
  • Light denim shirt, light denim shorts
  • Solid colored tank top, denim skirt, denim-like shoes
  • Dark denim shirt, dark denim jeans, solid colored shoes

Where would we be without accessories though? This is where you can give your outfit that extra pop! With my outfit, I wore gold jewelry: hoop earrings and a necklace that says babygirl.

Depending on the the color of your denim outfit, you can switch between silver and gold jewelry, or even funkier colors depending upon your top and color of your denim.

Finally, comes the shoes, which will also depend upon your denim choice. As I had on ripped jeans, I decided the bottom half of my outfit should be a bit more out there, so I decided to wear cheetah print booties.

I am standing with one leg on a chair showing off my double denim outfit.

The cheetah print pairs well with the white shirt I wore and also the light color of the jeans I wore. To make sure it matched fully, I added a brown belt.

I recommend pairing your outfit with either earrings, a necklace or a belt, unless your denim color is just so bold that it pops enough on its’ own.

Double denim is not the fashion no-no it once was, that’s for sure! Hopefully this blog post gave you some inspiration on how to create your own double denim style.
