The Black Hair Experience: The Black Hair Pop-Up You Need to Pull Up To

The Black Hair Experience: The Black Hair Pop-Up You Need to Pull Up To

Welcome back y’all! It’s been a long and crazy year, huh? It’s been a minute since I last published, but I come baring a gift.

That gift being…a review/post about what is possibly the most blackity, black, black pop-up ever! I recently had the pleasure of going to “The Black Hair Experience”, a pop-up in Atlanta dedicated to black hair.

Trust me y’all, they came correct.

The deets

The Black Hair Experience is the brain child of best friends Alisha Brooks and Elizabeth Austin-Davis. The two friends collaborated together to create mini exhibits dedicated to different parts of the black hair experience. From a “hot comb kitchen” to a wall full of “Black Hair” and “Hype Hair” magazines, these two women clearly did a lot of research for this pop-up!

The experience

Megan Thee Stallion was blasting the minute we walked inside of the pop-up located at 1540 Avenue Place in Atlanta, next to LOFT.

I knew I was home then and I hadn’t even walked into the first exhibit!

Masks were required the entire time at the pop-up plus we all had our temperatures checked before entering. There was plenty of hand sanitizer throughout the building and props were regularly sanitized.

Our first stop was this AMAZING braided swing with the words “The Black Hair Experience” in the background. Prime boomerang material. The next stop was a salon chair with afro picks all on the wall. Y’all know I had to take my time there, sitting and moving around in a variety of poses.

Following that was a section that had a mirror saying “I am the artwork” along with a wall that said “MY HAIR IS NOT A TREND”. I was living, y’all.

After that exhibit, there was a section that had every hair product known to man on display, including a few wigs! Seriously, they even had the pink lotion bottles and everything! Ending that section of exhibits was a see-saw with barrettes and other little girl hair accessories on the wall.

In the middle of the experience was a section set up like an office cubicle. The words “MY HAIR IS NOT UNPROFESSIONAL” were on the wall behind the desk. That section was easily my favorite part of the exhibit! I was living my CEO boss babe vibes there.

Other highlights of the pop-up included the magazine wall, full of covers of magazines I definitely flipped through when I was getting my hair done while I was younger, a headwrap wall and a brown background saying that “BLACK HAIR IS ART”.

There were way more exhibits than that, but why spoil the fun? 😉

The final verdict

It’s evident from the moment you walk in that Brooks and Austin-Davis really took their time designing and hearing stories from black women to create this pop-up. There were some things that I saw that I hadn’t seen since I was easily eight or nine!

The price is amazing for what you get. We went through the exhibit in the evening and only ran into a few couples. There was plenty of space to social distance and things were sanitized right after we touched them. The women working while we arrived were incredibly nice and didn’t mind us requesting songs or taking a group photo for us!

I highly recommend checking out this pop-up if it ever comes to a city near you!
