I had the pleasure of interviewing Maia Berry, owner and CEO of Shop Choco Girls, about her shop, which has all sorts of clothing and accessories geared towards black women. I’m so excited for y’all to read all about her shop chock full of #blackgirlmagic!

The Interview:
Thanks for talking with me today! First off, tell me a bit about yourself. Thank you for your time. My name is Maia. I am the CEO/Owner of Shop Choco Girls. I am 22 years old. Recent college grad from Gordon State College with my bachelors in biology.
What exactly is ShopChocoGirls? Shop Choco Girls is an online retail store that celebrates the melanin in women in color. Through all of our trials, I feel like we are unappreciated and celebrated the least, so I started Shop Choco Girls to celebrate women.

What is the inspiration behind your shop name? The inspiration behind the store name is literally the melanin in our skin. The “choco” in Shop Choco Girls refers to the chocolate/melanin in the skin of women of color.
What has been your favorite thing about running a shop so far? My favorite thing about running a shop so far has been meeting other determined, self driven, and goal oriented girls in business. It is truly inspiring to see so many women of color not settling and actually chasing their dreams every single day.
What are your favorite pieces in your shop that you’re currently selling? Currently, my favorite piece is the yellow melanin swimsuit, which is also one of my best sellers.

What is some advice that you’d give to somebody looking to start their own shop? My advice to anyone wanting to open their own store would be to do it! Hit the ground running, and never look back! Stay focused, and be consistent. Consistency is key.
